Brainstorm Of Content For Documentary & Formal Proposal

Brainstorm of Content for Documentary:

The documentary is about Tattoo's so alot can be discussed based on this topic, people have different views on Tattoo's that can be discussed.
  • INTRO: The beginning of the documentary we will have a simple graphic title name as Indelible Art. This will then be followed by an Establishing shot of a Tattoo parlour, with music lightly embedded underneath the natural sound which will work together. The narrator will then introduce the documentary, posing rhetorical questions that the audience can think about during the documentary.
  • INTERVIEWS: A Tattoo artist, People who have a Tattoo, VoxPops of people in the street and their views on Tattoo’s, also to people who want to get their Tattoo's removed.
  • CUTAWAYS: Possible Cutaway to the Tattoo Parlours, that can show you the tattooing stage. And also showing people that have had tattoos showing them, possible archive footage of people getting a tattoo can be used as many have been posted on youtube for us to use inbetween interviews and narrative. For music during our cutaways, we will use relevant up to date music for the audience to enjoy, we where able to determine the music that the audience will like due to research using questionnaires.
  • ARCHIVE FOOTAGE: The archive footage that will be in our documentary is someone getting tattooed hopefully we may be able to film it primary hand, but if not we have made the decision to get a video of one that we can use to show the audience, to convey how hard it is to get one and how much pain/ not much that the person who is getting the tattoo feels. Also archive footage of celebrities showing off their tattoos will be important as there is going to be some description of the celebrity tattoos and the trends that they set.
  • END: Possible ending is to have a rhetorical question at the end to make the audience think about what they have just seen and see if it has changed their opinion or re-enforced it. We will show interviews with the interviewee's opinions, to have a clear outline that the audience can think about.
Formal Proposal

Topic:

The topic we have chosen for our documentary is Tattooing. Tattooing is a controversial topic as there can be arguments for and against getting one, tattoos come in all different shapes and sizes and also people have tattoos that differ, People appose to getting a tattoo as they can be seen as self harm or not to peoples liking, there is an amount of pain that comes with having a tattoo so not everyone likes to have one.

Type of documentary:

This documentary will be a mixed documentary with a mixture of Narrative voiced over by a male voice as from a recent questionnaire most people thought that a male voice would be appropriate for this topic; it will also incorporate Interviews, and Archive footage. This will enable the documentary to explore more into the depth of tattooing showing evidence and the explanation of how they are done. The editing we have considered is fades and dissolved for our documentary in between interviews for the transition. We will also incorporate Voxpops for the thought of a random person on the street.

Style of documentary:

The style of the documentary is informal as the discussions will be very opinionated towards the subject as people have strong views on tattooing which generally conflict with one and other as there is a stereotype of the ‘Biker/Mosher’ feel about the people getting tattooed which people most protest against as anyone can get a tattoo nowadays from anywhere 18+.

Channel and Scheduling:

The documentary will be on channel 4 as it already airs a lot of controversial documentaries. The time we would put is at around 9:00 because it’s after the watershed, and it will allow the controversial arguments and debates about tattoo’s as there is body modification, it means that children shouldn’t watch this programme as it may influence them in the future. The audience we thought that was suitable is between 16-26 and people become interested in tattoo's at this age, and many that are 18+ are making the decision on whether or not they want a tattoo, with this documentary we would hope to inform the audience of what tattoos are about and whether to get one or not.

Target Audience:

Our target audience is 16-26; we gave out a questionnaire to people in this age range, to get a profile of what they like and what they don’t, we where able to read into the results by looking at a chart and figuring out what will be best for our documentary, by the results we will be able to incorporate these answers to make a documentary on what the audience want. We found out what music they preferred out of two different music types, which we have chosen to be Rihanna rude boy, we have also been able to see what the audiences favourite colour is which is blue to fit into our theme where we can use a lot of blue colours for the backgrounds, written text and also the graphics shown.

Primary Research:

The Primary Research we will need is where the locations of the filming will be set, For the tattoo theme, we have thought about using the green screen for some interviews, if the interviewee isn't available to come to the green screen we will have to find a suitable location for the filming, e.g. for the tattoo artist we should be able to interview him in the shop where the tattooing happens. Also we will have to find people who will allow us to film them who have tattoos or have a strong opinion on them. We gave out a number of 30 questionnaires to be filled in by the age range of 16-26 to get a view on what the audience think about, to put into our documentary.

Secondary Research:

For the Secondary Research, we will have to find cutaways that are relevant for the spoken narrative e.g. If the narrative is talking about the legal age of tattooing, then it can show a group of eighteen year olds that are maybe discussing the fact of getting a tattoo. We will able to get the cutaways from sources like: You tube, Books, photos & music, these can give us the information we need to create the documentary, and also for the visual appearance of the documentary. Facts from Books can be used as we can delve into a more descriptive spoke piece that the audience can listen to and get an understanding of what tattooing is really about.

Narrative structure:

The beginning of our documentary we will pose the question on whether or not to get a tattoo, posing clips of tattooing, Interviews will also be shown talking about the procedure of getting one and also the cost ect, also showing people that like/dislike the thoughts of tattooing, incorporating interviews with people who have had tattoos and people who haven’t, also experts. Apart from people, we will have pictures for evidence to what the interviewee’s will be talking about to support them.

The conflict we will appose is the negative aspect of how much to get a tattoo lazed off is a lot of money; also the stereotype which comes with tattoos that today’s society present, these will be presented by Voxpops and also with facts of people’s opinions in interviews. Conflict also is presented by the opinions of the interviewee’s and how they feel about tattooing in the whole, it will differ as we want very different views on the subject.

The end will be an open ending which will leave the audience answering what the Tattoo documentary has taught them, and whether or not to get a tattoo after the documentary has told the good and the bad sides of it, leaving the decision up to the audience allows them to be involved in a way. Showing the conclusion of what everyone thinks about tattoos it will show both sides of the discussions so that the outcome isn’t one sided, although it may seem to be it will not.

Outline of content:

We will create a Rhetorical Narrative, which will make the audience think about what the information the documentary conveys to them. By using a Rhetorical Narrative, we can persuade in a way the outcome of the viewer. Getting the audience to make their mind up is important as we are not telling them our thoughts, yet on the interviewee’s that we are filming, which is important because the audience aren’t stupid.
We will discuss about how tattoos affects someone’s life and how it can change it, the controversial issues of tattooing will come across as we will discuss the downsides of having a tattoo, and the good side of having one. We will have a combination of discussions from people that have had experience with tattoos and also from people that would never get tattoos. We will also show images of tattooing and also videos of someone being tattooed to show the extreme lengths that people go to get enable themselves to get one, and show what type of tattoos people like, using a combination of informal Voxpops and formal interviews it can build a picture of what today’s society thinks about tattoos and how we have changed from earlier years. At the end we will discuss what their feelings towards tattoos are in a frank matter to make it clear whether or not they are for or against the indelible art. We will be interviewing a tattoo artist who will be discussing hard hitting facts about tattooing.

Resources required:

We will need a Camera with a tripod to film the footage as will need the camera to be steady as we can use the steady cam for interviews, establishing shots ect. , as well as a microphone for the interviewee to speak down; this will be better later because background noise is more likely to be unheard with a microphone nearer to the interviewee’s mouth, than a boom which may pick up background noise a lot more. We will also need a green screen of which we can use for interviews to put relevant images in the background
